Hematite is a silvery, shiny opaque gemstone that almost looks like metal. It has been called bloodstone because the saw coolant becomes blood-red during the cutting process. Hematite is also used to make red ocher for painting. It is found in fossils, where it filled in the spaces as the organic material disintegrated.
